For the patriot, Sitka’s wildlife would constantly reinvigorate their national identity.  It is hard not to see an eagle when you look around out here and on the boat today I was able to catch some great photos of our national bird!

Benjamin Franklin once wrote:

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.”

It is safe to say that most locals have similar impressions of our nations bird.  Ravens are by far the most intelligent birds of Southeast but I have to say that Bald Eagles look amazing when they are in full flight!

Juvenile Bald Eagles do not have the Classic White Head and pure brown body associated with the bird.  Instead they are brown and covered with white freckles! The first time I saw one I thought it was a Golden Eagle but this is what the youth of America really look like.

The last thing I would like to post about Bald Eagles is a youtube clip which highlights the actual sounds this great bird makes.  Contrary to every movie you have ever seen, the Bald Eagle does not make a piercing cry (only made by a red tailed hawk) but rather a chicken like screeching noise.   Check this out…
